Baggage Weight Restrictions: 33 + 15 lbs
Be aware that all Indian domestic airlines have luggage weight restrictions that will effect how much you pack. Welcome to India! On our India domestic flights, check-in bags are limited to 33 lbs (15 kg). You are allowed one carry-on bag limited to 15 lbs (7 kg). Additional weight can be purchased at the airport upon check-in at a cost of 400 rupees per kilo of extra weight. That translates to roughly $5.70 for every 2.2 pounds of extra weight. Indian airlines will absolutely weigh your bags and charge you for excess weight. They are also particular about bag sizes, so please review the size restrictions too. With over a billion people in India, you can imagine the baggage issues they would have without restrictions. If you are exceeding the weight limits, please be prepared to pay the fee. For some of you, it’s no big deal to pay out an additional $75, but for those of you on a budget, we don’t want any surprises or upset guests at the airports because they didn’t know their bags were overweight or oversized. From our travel experience, half of what it takes to enjoy a journey is expectation management: plan and be prepared. The other half is the spirit and the mystery of the adventure itself.2
Baggage Size Restrictions
Also be aware that all Indian domestic airlines have luggage size restrictions. These restrictions vary between airlines, but from past tours most American luggage brands will comply with Indian policies. However, if your luggage is on the larger size we strongly recommend you check the size restriction policies of all airlines we will use on the tour and measure your bags.3
What About Personal Items?
Each passenger is allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item such as a handbag, purse, or laptop bag. Assistive devices and outer garments do not count as personal items. All carry-on luggage must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. You must be able to lift your carry-on into the overhead storage without assistance. However, airlines will vary slightly with regard to carry-on and checked baggage policies, both weight and size. Check each airlines policies on their respective websites.4
Check the Airline Baggage Policies
The most reliable source of information on airline baggage weight and size restrictions is on the airline websites themselves. If your bags are above the allowed weight and size restrictions, we recommend you check out each airline's baggage policy. We also recommend lightening your packing load. If you prefer to pay the excess weight fees be sure you know in advance about how much you will pay. We don't want any unpleasant surprises.5
